Native Gardens at Portal Park
The Papeton-Cragmor Parks Coalition has been hard at work establishing our first neighborhood garden at Portal Park. The garden is located at the south entrance of the park as you enter the parking lot.
Thanks to our neighbors and friends who have helped get this project started!
We planted 225 individual plants in early June and last week added Apache Plume shrubs, Mountain Mohagany, Rocky Mountain Penstemon, Golden Columbine, and Yarrow!
We are grateful for all the support that we’ve received from the incredibly knowledgeable staff at the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Dept! The City Greenhouse provided us with so many beautiful native plant species with many plants grown from local seeds.

Papeton + Venetian Village Yard Sales
As mentioned in last month’s newsletter we are excited for the return of the Venetian Village Yard Sales! Beginning in 1995 and running through 2019, many neighbors are excited to bring the yard sales back!
Holy Trinity Church will be aligning their annual sale to be at the same time as the yard sales.
We are currently seeking neighbors to sign up as vendors, scan the QR code to register or send an email to get the form.
If you don’t have an interest in hosting a sale, we still need assistance with organizing the two-day sale. We need help with placing signs, check-in table, and coordinating vendors. Let us know if you’re available to help.

Portal Park Mural
Local mural artists have been working on the design of the mural for the Portal Pool House, which we plan to have draft versions to share in the next month. Early design ideas have incorporated a galactic idea to represent the portal name, coal seams sitting between layers of sand and mudstone, and quotes in gold through the dark coal seam.
We would like to highlight the artists involved in the project, one of whom is Joe Ziegler an impressionist artist from Broomfield, CO, and a 2007 UCCS graduate, who has been doing mural work since 2015.
We will be seeking donations to reduce the project costs such as usable paint supplies, like brushes, rollers, tarps, and bins for pouring paint into. Connect with us if you have supplies or would like to contribute.
Flanagan Clean Up!
The Papeton-Cragmor Parks Coalition is partnering with the Trails and Open Space Coalition for a fun park clean up at Flanagan Park on July 21 from 10-11am. Bring your kids and meetup at the basketball court. Registration is required, so email us to get signed up!
New Gas Station on Fillmore
We received a notice from the City’s Planning Department regarding a proposed project at 712 East Fillmore Street. This site is the former Valero which was demolished. The proposed project is requesting an adjustment for a Fuel Dispensing Station roughly 145 feet from a residential zone district where 250 feet of separation is required.
As a neighborhood organization we would appreciate your feedback and thoughts on this project. With your comments we can organize a response and present it to the Planning Department. The deadline for comments if July 14.
